what we do
Peoples' Loan Program loans offer an alternative to predatory lending practices. Unlike predatory lenders, the goal of PLP is to help people succeed, which offers them hope and dignity. These loans are used to assist with essential needs, such as utilities or rent. There are no late fees, and the monthly pay back rate is determined on a case-by-case basis. If PLP cannot meet the needs of an applicant, it will refer the applicant to other agencies that are more likely to be able to help. PLP also seeks to raise awareness and educate people on the dangers of predatory lending, as well as fight for changes in the laws regarding these practices.
why we do it
Predatory lenders take advantage of people who are vulnerable, desperate, and who need immediate help. Most of these people have a lack of understanding about loans, terms, or finances and have no understanding of the trap they are getting themselves into. Some payday lenders' repayment structure and fees result in an equivalent APR of over 450% on the money borrowed. PLP seeks to protect these residents by providing a safe alternative that puts the needs of the borrower first.
